Boots introduces scheme where Britons can cash in by recycling beauty and health products

Boots is offering beauty lovers the chance to spring clean their bathroom cabinets and earn rewards through its Recycle at Boots scheme.

Customers will earn £5 worth of Boots Advantage Card points for every five empty health and beauty products they recycle. Points can be used like money when shopping in Boots stores.

The initiative aims to help reduce waste while rewarding shoppers for their environmentally conscious efforts.

New research from Boots found that most Britons (80 per cent) hold onto empty or ‘almost empty’ beauty products in their bathrooms.

Beauty fans who regularly wear makeup have the biggest collections, with 25 per cent having at least five empties, and 10 per cent hoarding more than seven. One in five will keep these products for months at a time rather than disposing of them.

The Recycle at Boots scheme, available at 800 stores nationwide, accepts hundreds of empty products that customers might not realise can be recycled.

These include mascara wands, wipe packaging, travel minis, serum tubes, toothbrushes and more.

Many Britons (48 per cent) who don’t recycle aren’t sure what can be recycled and where, according to the research. Boots team members have shared creative tips for using up those ‘almost empties’ before recycling them.

One suggested using a bobby pin to push out remaining product from tubes, while another recommended hosting a pamper night with friends.

A third advised repurposing old eyeshadow by mixing it with water to create watercolours for crafting.

Customers can unlock the 500 Boots Advantage Card points (worth £5) when they spend £10 in-store and deposit five eligible empties. To find their nearest Recycle at Boots drop-off point, shoppers can use the Boots Store Locator.

For those unsure about what can be recycled, the retailer has created an infographic highlighting which items can be recycled kerbside versus at Boots stores.

Head of ESG at Boots Candice Smith said: “Many of us are guilty of holding on to products in the bathroom unnecessarily.

“This spring we want to help by encouraging everyone to finish every drop of those forgotten products and recycle the empties at your local Boots.

“You can clear more space in your bathroom and get rewarded in the process – a spring clean win.”

This month, Boots is supporting the Great British Beauty Clean Up, an industry-wide campaign led by the British Beauty Council. The initiative aims to increase the number of empty beauty products that are recycled across the UK.

Boots also reminds customers that any unopened health and beauty items can be donated to The Hygiene Bank at over 600 drop-off points in their stores.

This comes as Boots relaunches 15-minute service to help prevent “serious health problems”.
