Socialist U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), of all people, had something positive to say about Pres. Donald Trump’s border policies. It was a real “man bites dog” moment.
The occasion was yesterday’s appearance by Sanders on ABC News’ This Week Sunday morning public affairs show. It went something like this,
Question: Is there anything that you think Trump has done right?
SANDERS: Yeah. I mean, I think cracking down on fentanyl, making sure our borders are stronger. Look, nobody thinks illegal immigration is appropriate, and I happen to think we need comprehensive immigration reform, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for people to be coming across the border illegally.
“Nobody”? I could name quite a few people who loudly proclaim that illegal immigration is entirely appropriate, under any and all circumstances. But let’s take the win where we find it.
To be clear, Sen. Sanders went on yesterday the criticize Trump’s deportation policies (Bernie is worried about losing cheap farm labor. No, really.) and to again push for “comprehensive immigration reform.”
The Sanders ABC interview yesterday made bigger news for his effort to walk off the set over questions regarding a possible Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez run for Senate.
Sen. Sanders and Rep. Ocasio Cortes are traveling the nation in their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour. Sanders vows, “We will not allow America to become an oligarchy.”
Of course, by any standard definition of the term, America is already an oligarchy and has been for some time. What Sanders objects to is that for the first time in a while, the oligarchs are not on his side of the political divide. And by “oligarchs,” Sanders is referring specifically to Elon Musk.
Sanders has little to worry about. Two years ago, I did some digging into the Minnesota political campaign donation habits of the Forbes 400 richest Americans.
Some 23 of the richest billionaires gave to Minnesota Democrats while only 7 gave to Minnesota Republicans. One of those gave to both parties.
Oligarchs for me, but not for thee.
