On Tuesday, Fox News’s Jessica Tarlov, one of the network’s more liberal hosts, questioned Elon Musk about the role of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the possibility that there may be some shenanigans going on in the DOGE’s work. Elon proceeded to administer a very polite, well-phrased beatdown.

The balance of the X post reads:
“Everything that DOGE does is an open book. We are the most transparent organization in government EVER!” “I am under such an extreme spotlight, so much scrutiny, that it’s literally IMPOSSIBLE for me to get away with ANYTHING nefarious — nor do I wish to!”
Jessica Tarlov stated that she owned a Tesla herself – a point or two for being reasonable as far as that goes, anyway – but went on to essentially accuse Elon Musk of embezzling from the government.
JESSICA TARLOV: Liberal Tesla lover here, my sister has two in her family, so, have not thrown any Molotov cocktails recently (laughter).
ELON MUSK: Thanks!
JT: But I wanted to talk to you about what DOGE has been doing. So you’ve been making cuts to a lot of the agencies, have opened investigations and regulatory battles with your companies, at the same time, you continue to get billions in government contracts, Tesla gets billions in subsidies, how do you explain that to the American people?
EM: Well, everything that DOGE does is an open book. So we’re I think the most transparent action, the most transparent organization in government, ever. Every single DOGE action is listed on the DOGE.gov website. It’s also listed on the X handle. So, if anyone has a concern about any one of those actions, they can bring that up, they can raise that, and I do want to say, that sometimes we make mistakes. Nobody bats a thousand. We won’t, at times, make mistakes, but that we’ll act very quickly to correct it.
I am under such an extreme spotlight, so much scrutiny, that it is literally impossible for me to get away with anything nefarious. Nor do I wish to. So, this is a case where we have radical transparency, we’re actually willing to admit that we do make mistakes, often people are not willing to admit that they make mistakes. But we are, and we want to emphasize we fix them quickly, and we’re trying to do the right thing for the American taxpayer, for the American people, and I think history will be the judge that what we’ve done here, and what we’re doing, is a very good thing for the strength and the future of America.

Elon Musk was one of the Trump administration’s first key figures to appear on stage at CPAC 2025, and I remember when asked about accusations that he would try to siphon money somehow from the federal government, he replied with a laugh, “Yes, I’ll steal some money from Social Security, then I’ll finally be able to afford nice stuff.”
Musk is, to put it bluntly, not only the wealthiest man on the planet, but he’s one of, if not the smartest man on the planet – and you could make a good argument that the former follows from the latter. He doesn’t need this job; he already has screw-you money – were someone to bring him up in a civil case, Elon could defeat it by literally backing up dump trucks full of money to the courthouse doors and dumping it in – but he loves his adopted home, the United States. He’s doing this because that matters to him. He has seen our nation about to fall off a fiscal cliff, and so he’s taken on a job that makes the Labors of Hercules look like a Cub Scout filling up his merit badge list.
And, as he proved in this interview, he can handle the press, too.
