Transportation Secretary Duffy Delivers a Reality Check to Blue Origin Lady ‘Astronauts’ – RedState

The ladies of the highly publicized 11-minute “Blue Origin” rocket trip might have wished they’d stayed in space a little longer, because after their cringeworthy antics upon returning to Earth, they’ve been the subject of widespread mockery. Singer Katy Perry has been roasted the most, because as Bonchie reported, she acted like she’d just returned from a 10-year trip to Mars and immediately upon landing launched into a Kamala-like word salad about how space had taught her about love or something. Left-wing TV news personality and Oprah Winfrey BFF Gayle King, meanwhile, said the short flight was “a reminder that we need to do better, be better human beings.”

No, it wasn’t a reminder that “we need to do better,” it was a spectacle that accomplished very little if anything scientifically.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has some bad news for the girl gang though: they are not in fact actual astronauts.

Duffy’s tweet continues:

But the last FAA guidelines under the Commercial Space Astronaut Wings Program were clear: Crewmembers who travel into space must have “demonstrated activities during flight that were essential to public safety, or contributed to human space flight safety.”

The crew who flew to space this week on an automated flight by Blue Origin were brave and glam, but you cannot identify as an astronaut. They do not meet the FAA astronaut criteria.

Ouch. It seems you actually have to accomplish something to be considered an “astronaut.”

That All-Female Blue Origin Flight Was Stupid to the Point of Insult

Although Duffy did not directly criticize the team, plenty of others did, including a number of Hollywood celebrities—a group not generally known for their self-awareness—for some reason:

It wasn’t just social media users who criticized the all-female Blue Origin space mission on Monday either

In fact, a slew of fellow celebrities – including Emily Ratajkowski, Olivia Wilde, Olivia Munn, and Amy Schumer – have slammed the spectacle as a frivolous publicity campaign for Bezos’ space company.

According to one outlet, Perry is “regretting” her post-flight antics and the criticism it’s unleashed. Possibly the most unexpected beatdown, however, comes from a corporation: fast-food burger joint Wendy’s, who dropped a funny but pointed post on social media:

They followed up that zinger with one that made reference to her 2008 purposefully provocative song, “I Kissed A Girl”:

Wendy’s says, “We like our tweets the way we like our fries: hot, crispy, and better than anyone expects from a fast food restaurant.” Well they certainly accomplished that here. Debate is raging online whether it’s appropriate for a corporation to be mocking a citizen, but for now, at least, they’re not apologizing.

Jeff Bezos has obviously had a hugely successful career and is currently the second-richest person in the world (although Elon Musk is worth considerably more). Nevertheless, this whole stunt seems to be poorly thought out and has spectacularly backfired in the world of public opinion. Did it really advance womankind to send this bunch in their form-fitting outfits and no actual duties into space for what is arguably no more than a vanity project? It looked especially vapid after the dramatic rescue of real astronauts who’d been stranded in space by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Judging from the reaction I’m seeing, the answer is an emphatic “no.”

And they’re not astronauts.
