A shocking video reveals the terrifying moment a mother, stopped by police, suddenly accelerated, dragging two officers along the road. Lauren Baird, 43, provided false identification to officers in Aviemore, Scotland, after a system check revealed the car was uninsured.
When confronted and informed of her impending arrest, Baird abruptly drove off. The dashcam footage captured the horrifying scene as she dragged the two officers along the B9152, narrowly avoiding pulling them under her vehicle. The July 2023 incident was recorded on police dashcam and presented at Inverness Sheriff Court. One officer managed to free himself from the moving car after being dragged a short distance, but his female colleague was pulled several yards down the road.
Both officers were rushed to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment of multiple injuries. The female officer, now reliant on crutches, has yet to return to duty. Baird appeared in court personally, admitting to culpable and reckless conduct endangering the officers’ lives; attempting to pervert the course of justice by providing false details to the police and trying to hide the fact she was driving without a licence or insurance.
Fiscal depute Susan Love informed the court that the police had trouble verifying Baird’s true identity during a half-hour conversation, during which Baird showed them a photo she claimed was her, but it clearly wasn’t.
Ms Love remarked: “It was fortunate that the officers did not go under the wheels of her car. They were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment to grazing, bruises, head swelling, an injured knee and a staved finger.”
Upon investigating the hotel following the incident, police colleagues located her there. Baird’s vehicle had been obscured on a forest road near the establishment. The prosecution service decided to dismiss the drug possession charges levelled against Baird.
Sheriff Sara Matheson postponed Baird’s sentencing until June 3 for the preparation of a background report and to assess a restriction of liberty order. Meanwhile, Baird was allowed to remain on bail.
