The Garcia pivot ? | Power Line

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said she believes the deportation fight over Maryland man Kilmar Abrego Garcia is the Trump administration’s way of distracting public attention away from the tariffs and economic impacts.

Klobuchar joined CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, highlighting her fellow Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s (Md.) trip to El Salvador to meet with the Abrego Garcia amid the administration’s defiance in the legal battle.

What?

That’s according to reporting today in The Hill newspaper. You’ll recall that we last saw “Maryland man” Garcia sipping margaritas with the senior U.S. senator from Maryland on the veranda down El Salvador way, in Garcia’s native land.

I confess to never having heard of U.S. Sen. Van Hollen prior to l’affaire Garcia. Now the Senator is unavoidable. But it’s the senior senator from Minnesota that I’m focusing on here. The Hill continues,

“They have picked out this case and this man because it’s about a subject that they want to keep in the news,” Klobuchar said of Abrego Garcia’s deportation. “So, it’s even more cynical than just flaunting the law.”

“They’re doing it because they want to distract people from the fact that our economy is in a tailspin thanks to them, their tariffs,” she continued.

There can be no sentient, corporeal being in existence that believes this to be true. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb in saying that every single member of the current Administration would be fine if Garcia were never mentioned again in the media. The only reason I can imaging Klobuchar uttering those words is an attempt by her to change the subject, not the other way around.

But it was this post by Sen. Klobuchar on Twitter (X) that caught my eye yesterday, where she writes,

When I’m at town halls, people who voted for Trump want to know why he isn’t bringing prices down or helping with housing. Trump’s tariff taxes are bad for everyone—eating into margins and raising costs.

Again, Sen. Klobuchar begins with a claim that has never happened in the history of the world. And again with the tariffs.

The say a fanatic is someone who can’t change her mind and won’t change the subject.
