Mark Carney’s Liberals have won a shock election victory, just months after he took over from Justin Trudeau as leader of the party.
The former Bank of England Governor only became Prime Minister in March, after defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
In an unexpected result, he has now beaten the leader of the Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre as well and will remain PM.
The Liberals are projected to win more of parliament’s 343 seats than the Conservatives, but it is still unclear if they secured a majority, or whether they will have to negotiate with other parties to stay in power.

The Liberals looked to have been heading for a crushing defeat after three terms in power, until Donald Trump intervened and started attacking Canada’s economy as well as threatening its sovereignty, suggesting it should become the 51st state.
The US President’s actions infuriated Canadians and stoked a surge in nationalism that helped the Liberals flip the election narrative and win a fourth-straight term.
