Comedian Bill Maher described President Donald Trump as “gracious and measured” during their recent White House dinner, contrasting with his typical public persona. He also noted their mutual appreciation for dialogue despite political differences.
Maher gave a fairly detailed description of the surprising sit-down with the President on Friday’s edition of “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
As most supporters already know – certainly readers of RedState – Trump isn’t always the man behind the scenes that he portrays in public as a leader.
Trump has long been viewed as a cutthroat businessman and now politician who, when the cameras aren’t rolling, is as nice and charming a guy as you’ll ever meet. It’s who he is.
Maher now understands that.
“You can hate me for it, but I’m not a liar. Trump was gracious and measured,” he said. “And why he isn’t that in other settings – I don’t know, and I can’t answer, and it’s not my place to answer. I’m just telling you what I saw, and I wasn’t high.”

Maher then called out those who viewed his dinner with the President as anything more than a cordial conversation between two adversaries who disagreed on certain political ideologies.
You know, like adults often do.
“To all the people who treated this like it was some kind of summit meeting … you’re ridiculous,” he jabbed.
“I have no power. I’m a f**king comedian, and he’s the most powerful leader in the world!” Maher exclaimed. “I’m not the leader of anything except maybe a contingent of centrist-minded people who think there’s got to be a better way of running this country than hating each other every minute.”
On that note, the comedian, who has taken his own vicious jabs at Trump in the past, said the meeting, brokered by Kid Rock, was born of “a belief that there’s gotta be something better than hurling insults from 3,000 miles away.”
In true form for both men, however, Maher had his staff print out a list of dozens upon dozens of insults the President has leveled at him over the years – ranging from “low-life dummy” to “sleazebag – and Trump actually signed it for him.
“I brought this to the White House because I wanted him to sign it, which he did with good humor,” Maher revealed.
Amazing.
For his White House meeting with President Trump, Bill Maher brought a list of insults Trump had said about him over the years and handed it to him.

Maher may be correct that this was not a peace summit or a historic treaty signing, but his meeting with President Trump is significant.
It shows that two people with strongly diametric viewpoints can still have a civilized discussion. Conservatives understand that concept, but the left has yet to pick up on it.
Maher sensed that with this comment: “And I know as I say that, millions of liberal sphincters just tightened. ‘Oh, my God, Bill, you gonna say something nice about him?’ What I’m gonna do is report exactly what happened.”
Maher went on to describe Trump as authentic, expressing laughter much more than he does in front of the camera and saying that everything he ever “not liked about him” was utterly non-existent.
When the left rages about the President being Hitler, tries to have him imprisoned, and encourages violence against him and his family – that’s the real man they’re going after.
Will anyone on that side of the aisle be brave enough to do what Maher has done and open a dialogue with the leader of the free world? It seems reasonable and probably a solid political tactic for the Democratic party, which is viewed almost universally as out of touch and not grounded in reality.
