Canadian media are reporting that, Mark Carney, the newly-minted, globalist Prime Minister of Canada (America’s hat) will soon be calling for a new general election.
Carney has held the office only since Friday and the CBC reports he is looking at election dates of either April 28 or May 5. Both dates are Mondays.
The Canadian Parliament was supposed to have resumed sitting, for the first time in months, on Monday, March 24. That doesn’t look like it will happen.
As I wrote earlier, Carney became Prime Minister of His Majesty’s government (and head of the ruling Liberal Party) without being a member of Parliament himself. Presumably, Carney will stand for election to represent a safe-Liberal district (riding) so that he, too, will become a member of the House of Commons.
In the election, the main opponents for Carney’s Liberals will be the Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre. The Conservative leader may be best known south of the border for a brilliant media interview he did two years ago while standing in a farm field eating an apple.
Just a few months ago, the Liberal Party was deeply unpopular, which forced the ouster of nepo baby PM Justin Trudeau after spending a decade in office. With Trudeau gone, the recent trade war with Trump has revived the fortunes of the Liberals. It’s possible that they could win this snap election, perhaps even eking out a slim majority of seats, something the party has not accomplished since 2015.
In the previous two elections (2019 and 2021), the Conservative Party received the most votes of any party, but were edged out by the Liberals for the greatest number of seats.
But five weeks is a long time in politics, these days.
