Dr. Mehmet Oz, a well-known television personality-turned-politician who faced a U.S. Senate confirmation hearing Friday to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, has seemingly changed his public positions regarding hot-button cultural issues in recent years.
Formerly seen as a moderate with liberal leanings, Oz’s views on topics such as abortion and trans rights have taken a noticeable rightward shift since his unsuccessful attempt to run as a Republican for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania in 2022.
On abortion, Oz moved from defending access and critiquing bans to embracing life at conception and states’ rights. On trans issues, he transitioned from amplifying the voices of transgender-identifying children to questioning sex-change procedures for minors and opposing transgender sports policies.
Here are examples of how his stances on these divisive issues have evolved.
