The Prime Minister has rejected calls for a statutory inquiry into the historical sexual abuse of thousands of children by gangs of men.
It comes after Labour dropped its commitment for five grooming gang inquiries, making the announcement on the final day before Parliament breaks up for Easter recess.
In January, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper pledged £5 million to support five local investigations into grooming gangs. However, this has now been reallocated into a “flexible” £5 million fund.
The government said it would still support inquiries if requested by local authorities but it no longer committed to five.
A rape gang survivor has condemned Labour’s decision to scale back local inquiries into grooming gangs, describing it as a “profound betrayal” to victims.
Lucia Rea expressed her dismay at the Government’s backtracking on child sexual exploitation investigations.
Speaking to GB News, Lucia Rea said: “It’s just complete dismay with this backtracking from the government, especially on something as serious as child sexual exploitation. It’s just a profound betrayal to the survivors.”
