DOGE has been off the front pages lately, but its work continues. The latest is unemployment insurance:
An initial survey of Unemployment Insurance claims since 2020 revealed the following:
– 24.5k people over 115 years old claimed $59M in benefits
– 28k people between 1 and 5 years old claimed $254M in benefits
– 9.7k people with birth dates over 15 years in the future claimed…— Department of Government Efficiency (@DOGE) April 10, 2025
The lesson of DOGE is that there is an enormous amount of waste and fraud in everything the government does. Sometimes the identified fraud is tens of millions of dollars; sometimes there are billions of dollars that can’t be accounted for. The bottom line is that government, both at the federal level and the state level, is both incompetent and corrupt. Taxpayers do not get their money’s worth, and as a result (along, of course, with other factors) we run a $2 trillion annual deficit.
The Democratic Party is bitterly opposed to everything DOGE does. It has organized anti-DOGE and anti-Elon Musk demonstrations across the country, and it refuses to condemn destruction of Teslas and firebombing of Tesla dealerships. This is really extraordinary. In the past, politicians at least pretended to be opposed to government waste and corruption. Now, the Democratic Party is on record: every single dollar of government spending is sacrosanct, and not a single dollar can be cut, regardless of how corrupt or absurd the spending may be.
So I guess we have arrived at a clarifying moment.
