Lionel Messi, 37, makes retirement admission as Inter Miami star opens up on 2026 World Cup

Lionel Messi has addressed growing speculation about his potential participation in the 2026 World Cup, refusing to rule out the possibility of leading Argentina’s title defence.

The 37-year-old football icon finally captured the prestigious trophy in Qatar 2022, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time.

Many assumed Messi would retire from international duty following that triumph.

However, the Inter Miami star has remained integral to Argentina’s success, starring in their Copa America victory last year.

With the next World Cup just over a year away, calls have intensified for Messi to continue his international career.

The tournament will be hosted across the USA, Mexico and Canada.

Speaking on the Simplemente Futbol podcast, Messi revealed he is taking a measured approach to his international future.

“This year will be key to see what I decide regarding the 2026 World Cup,” the Argentine captain stated.

He emphasised the importance of consistent playing time and physical wellbeing in his decision-making process.

“Being able to play consistently, feeling good. Last year I started preseason and had some injuries,” Messi explained.

“This year I had a good preseason, got off to a good start, and I feel good. But it’s a long season because it doesn’t end until December and the Club World Cup is on.”

Rather than committing to specific targets, Messi emphasised his preference for a cautious approach to his international future.

“I think and see, but I don’t want to set goals. I take it day by day and see how I feel physically and be honest with myself,” he said.

Since joining David Beckham’s Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has been reunited with former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez in Florida.

His MLS move raised questions about his international longevity, but he has continued to perform for Argentina.

Despite Messi’s cautious approach, Suarez has suggested the Argentine has clear ambitions for 2026.

After ending his own international career last year, the striker offered insight into Messi’s thinking.

“Retirement? Leo Messi has that desire to play at the World Cup 2026 with Argentina,” the Uruguayan told Ovacion.

Suarez revealed the pair had discussed the topic of retirement, albeit lightheartedly.

“Messi and I talked about retirement in a joking tone, but he’s really looking forward to playing in next year’s World Cup,” he said.

“It’s hard to talk about a deadline, about an end. A football player has to prepare because he’s not ready yet.”
