Education Minnesota is the state teachers’ union and a huge political force in the state. The union is currently running an inescapable ad campaign making a pitch for more money, higher salaries, and better pensions. It’s all about them. It’s certainly not about the educational results we associate with good teachers or good teaching. According to the union’s own press release:
The major purpose of the ad campaign, which is planned to run for six weeks, is to call on Minnesotans to support better pay, secure pensions and improved health care for Minnesota’s educators, especially as the White House abandons public education as a national priority.
In the wake of President Donald Trump issuing an executive order to shut down the U.S. Department of Education, these new ads will emphasize that Minnesotans need to stand up for what is most important to us, including the schools that support all our students and the educators who guide them.
“Providing a great public education to every Minnesota student, no matter where they’re from, what they look like or how they learn, is up to every Minnesotan now,” said Denise Specht, president of Education Minnesota. “As the educators in these ads say, it’s up to us to protect what really matters — because as Minnesotans, we take care of each other, especially when Washington won’t.”
Every Minnesota taxpayer is workin’ for the union. The ads strike me as a glorified joke, of the non-April Fools’ variety. Is this persuasive?
Here is one more, featuring an overfed spokesman who could serve as a useful example of expressive form for the cause pursued by the union. More!
JOHN adds: Minnesota has carried out a laboratory experiment, and has conclusively proved that more spending does not generate better education. The chart below was created by American Experiment’s Catrin Wigfall. The green line is per pupil, inflation-adjusted spending in Minnesota. The black and blue lines are reading and math scores, respectively:
American Experiment is about to launch an all-out assault on the teachers’ union and its malign influence on public policy. Watch for it.
