But in a letter to Stewart which was read at the studio opening, Hoyle said: “I was very excited to hear that your brilliant career is being recognised in perpetuity by GB News.

“Not only is it an incredible honour to have a new studio opened today in your name at the QE2 Centre, but your face and reputation will forever be associated with the news in Westminster.”

He continued: “I am sure many others are better able to refer to your illustrious career, but from my part, I have always admired your journalism, which I know has inspired generations of young people to take up the calling.

“Your hallmark has always been an unflappable delivery of news, in an instantly recognisable, authoritative, yet clear and determined voice – that always drew viewers to watch and listen, because it instinctively told them that something important had happened.

“On a more personal note, I have always looked forward to our interactions and feel privileged to have been interviewed by you before you retired.”
