Pollster Frank Luntz says that “political history” may have been changed this week by the marathon speech delivered on the Senate floor by U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey).
I could be wrong. I’ve been wrong before. But my guess is that the whole episode will be forgotten by next week until a similar stunt is attempted, somewhere. I fully confess to not having seen a single second of the 25-hour (officially, 25 hr. 5 min.) address by the senior Senator from New Jersey and former mayor of Newark.
It wasn’t technically a “filibuster,” as no actual business was before the body before Sen. Booker began his day-long-plus…oration. But Mr. Luntz was suitably impressed as The Hill reports,
I want to emphasize what Cory Booker did over the last 24 hours may have changed the course of political history. I watched a lot of it. I listened to words. I listened to phrases.
Luntz continued,
“He struck the kind of tone that grassroots Democrats are looking for. He gave them a reason to fight. He gave them a reason to stand up and say, this is my country too,” Luntz told [NewsNation] anchor Leland Vittert.
As I never tire of repeating, we are now into April, and Pres. Trump’s approval rating has not fallen below 50 percent on a single day since retaking office in January. Democrats are at a low point, looking for something to spark a comeback. So far, the fake town halls and the by-elections haven’t done the trick.
Perhaps a fake filibuster will.
