Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is being coy about his plans. He is eligible to run for a third term as governor in 2026, and there is also an open Senate seat next year. But Walz hasn’t announced for either of those races. I think that instead, he is going to try to get the Democratic nomination for president.
Walz has been on a national tour, accompanied by figures like Bernie Sanders and Robert O’Rourke. Why? He has been absent from the state he ostensibly governs, and has even taken heat in the liberal press for being AWOL.
In his speeches to the Democratic Party faithful, Walz nails down the far left end of the political spectrum. Thus:
Reminder: virtually every person in the political information distribution complex told you that Tim Walz was the Dems secret weapon for attracting moderates and rural men. https://t.co/ZLJ5YUhAOZ

You might think it bonkers to claim that the Democrats lost because they didn’t go sufficiently hard left, but that is what many Democratic activists believe. This is why Chuck Schumer is taking abuse for declining to shut down the federal government.
It is true that Tim Walz is “evil,” a “creep” and a “jerk.” He is one of the most vicious and mean-spirited people in politics. But he knows his party’s base: a vicious, mean-spirited jerk may be exactly what Democrats are looking for in 2028. Those Democrats who vote in primaries, anyway; the most left-wing Democrats.
Maybe his ambition will prove delusional, but you heard it here first: Tim Walz is running for president in 2028.
