A little boy has tragically died, two months shy of his birthday, after suffering a fatal brain injury in a devastating incident at his nursery.
On April 24, paramedics were called to the nursery where young Henry Spletter was fighting for breath following a choking incident. Despite medical teams managing to revive him and airlifting him to Townsville University Hospital, he sadly passed away two days later on April 26, due to a non-survivable brain injury.
The circumstances surrounding what Henry choked on remain unclear, and an investigation into the incident has been launched. Henry’s parents, Aaron and Rachel Spletter, have paid a heart-wrenching tribute to their son, describing him as “beautiful in every way.”
Ms Spletter has also expressed gratitude towards the staff at Redlynch’s Busy Bees childcare centre in Cairns, north Queensland, who were present throughout the distressing ordeal. She recalled: “He was very active, once he got up, you couldn’t stop him. To our knowledge, the staff provided great first aid and we’re thankful to them for that, as well as emergency services and the Cairns and Townsville ICU departments. So many people did all they could to support him until the end.”
In a remarkable act of kindness, Henry’s family made the selfless decision to donate his heart. In a poignant update, Ms Spletter confirmed that the donation had been successful, bringing life to another child.
Busy Bees Australia chief executive Phil McKenzie expressed his sorrow, stating: “The entire Busy Bees team is extremely shocked and saddened by Henry’s passing. Out of respect for the Spletter family and to support our team, the Redlynch centre was closed on Monday,” according to MailOnline.
The outpouring of public sympathy for the Spletter family has been striking. A GoFundMe page created by family friend Stuart Brown has seen immense charitable spirit, with contributions from more than 1,000 individuals amassing $115,440 AUD (£55,000).
The heartfelt message on the fundraising page reads: “We are deeply saddened to share the news of Henry Spletter’s passing. Henry was a beloved son, big brother, and shining light in the lives of those who knew him. Aaron, Rachel, and their family are grieving the loss of their precious child.”
It continues: “Henry’s family is now facing an unimaginable challenge, and this GoFundMe has been created to support them during this difficult time. Your donations will help Aaron, Rachel, and their newborn daughter, Aubrey, take the time they need to grieve, heal, and be together.”
The appeal concludes with a compassionate plea: “We ask that you hold Henry’s family in your thoughts and prayers. Every donation, message, and share will bring comfort and support to those who are grieving.”
Queensland Police have clarified that Henry’s death is not being considered suspicious and that a report will be compiled for the Coroner.
