That probably isn’t news: the fact that Trump has broken the Democrats, including their reporters and editors, has been evident for quite a while. But it is remarkable that even abroad, Trump seems to create a force field that renders otherwise-normal people bonkers.
Every utterance by Trump is viewed with fascination and often horror. Every casual comment, every bit of trolling or hyperbole, every jocular remark, is grist for the anti-Trump mill. One case in point, out of thousands, is this piece in the relatively sane Telegraph: “Battle Lines Trump Edition: The Canadians fighting back against annexation.” These people take seriously the idea that President Trump is bent on annexing Canada:
Canadians are angry, very angry. US president Donald Trump is not backing down from his annexation plans – and this week he even called the country “nasty”.
The idea that there is a “plan” to “annex” Canada, from which Trump is “not backing down,” is more or less insane. It is fun to contemplate the idea of U.S. Army divisions massed on the northern border, likely across my state, Minnesota, and invading Saskatchewan. Or Air Force jets bombing Montreal. But does anyone believe this is even remotely possible? The idea is laughable.
On last week’s episode, we looked at a small minority of Canadian separatists who said they would welcome Trump’s plan to turn Canada into the 51st state.
There is no “plan.” The whole idea is a joke.
[O]n today’s episode, we go back to Canada and look at the majority’s view on Trump’s expansionist plans and how the current crisis is affecting politics there….
“Trump’s expansionist plans.” There are none. It may be, however, that the “current crisis”–consider that, by the way: Trump muses out loud that Canada should be our 51st state and it is now a “crisis”–will impact Canadian politics. In fact, the anti-Trump and anti-U.S. hysteria that is being whipped up by the Canadian press might cost the Conservative Party candidate the next election. If that happens, it will be a sad commentary on 1) the Canadian press, creating a xenophobic frenzy out of nothing, 2) Canadian voters, buying into an absurd proposition, and 3) Trump himself, for being chronically unable to keep his mouth shut.
