President Donald Trump on Thursday called for an investigation into the nation’s courts after the judge attempting to block the deportation flights of suspected gang members was also assigned to preside over the case involving the Signal chat leak between top Trump administration officials that discussed military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.
In an early morning post, Trump ripped into Judge James Boasberg, a liberal U.S. District Court Judge in Washington, D.C., who has a history of undermining border security efforts. Boasberg is overseeing a case over the deportation flights of suspected members of Tren de Aragua to El Salvador and now a lawsuit filed against the Trump administration claiming that the Signal chat violated the Federal Records Act.
“How disgraceful is it that ‘Judge’ James Boasberg has just been given a fourth ‘Trump Case,’ something which is, statistically, IMPOSSIBLE. There is no way for a Republican, especially a TRUMP REPUBLICAN, to win before him. He is Highly Conflicted, not only in his hatred of me — Massive Trump Derangement Syndrome! — but also, because of disqualifying family conflicts,” Trump posted.
As reported by The Daily Wire, Boasberg’s wife, Elizabeth Manson, has also been involved in partisan political activity and even donated over $11,000 to Democratic candidates, federal data shows. Manson gave a combined $3,000 to the Hillary Victory Fund and Hillary for America when the Democratic candidate was facing off against Trump in the 2016 election.
In the same Truth Social post, Trump floated the idea of using a wheel system to assign judges to cases.
“Boasberg, who is the Chief Judge of the D.C. District Court, seems to be grabbing the ‘Trump Cases’ all to himself, even though it is not supposed to happen that way. Is there still such a thing as the ‘wheel,’ where the Judges are chosen fairly, and at random? The good news is that it probably doesn’t matter, because it is virtually impossible for me to get an Honest Ruling in D.C.”
The Trump administration has repeatedly clashed with federal judges over the past few weeks who have put sweeping orders blocking attempted government reforms. Earlier this week, the Justice Department asked for the Supreme Court to step in and block one federal judge’s order that the government rehire some 16,000 probationary workers.
“Our Nation’s Courts are broken, with New York and D.C. being the most preeminent of all in their Corruption and Radicalism,” Trump posted Thursday. “There must be an immediate investigation of this Rigged System, before it is too late!”
Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is planning a hearing for April 2 to examine “legislative solutions” to the problem of overreaching decisions from federal judges.
