2028 Presidential preference polls are already a thing, somehow. I know this fact only because I saw a headline in the U.K. Daily Mail (“Shock 2028 presidential poll shows the Democrats can’t help themselves”).
And to be clear, there is nothing remotely shocking about the poll results. The poll was published yesterday by Morning Consult and shows the most recent Democratic nominee Kamala Harris at 36 percent, and former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a distant second at 10 percent. U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Gov. Tim Walz and Gov. Gavin Newsom are in a three-way tie for third at 5 percent each.
Twitter commentator FischerKing has a simple explanation for this phenomenon, writing,
Who pays for these polls? They’re worthless. She’s the only one with brand recognition. One hard primary and she will be out before Iowa just like in 2020 – because she sucks, isn’t bright, isn’t articulate except when reciting talking points.
He’s correct. But as for worthless? The Daily Mail, FisherKing himself, and others are all writing about the poll. Looks like Morning Consult got their money’s worth.
I checked and I was mildly relieved to confirm that the website RealClearPolitics does not yet have a tab for the 2028 election. Understandably, they’re still working on important contests yet to occur in 2025 and 2026.
Not to be outdone, Newsweek has a poll on the 2028 Republican race, their headline, “Donald Trump Among 2028 Presidential Favorites Despite Two-Term Limit.”
I honestly would have thought the 22nd Amendment would have preempted that headline. What Newsweek reports is not really a preference poll, but odds quoted by the English bookmaker William Hill.
William Hill has VP. J.D. Vance as the favorite at odds of 5 to 2. Trump is at 5 to 1 and dark horse Donald Trump, Jr., ranks third at 9 to 1 odds. Perhaps in London, they haven’t heard of the 22nd Amendment, in the same manner that we are unfamiliar with the constitutional duties of the Groom of the Stool.
As for me, before I place any bets, I’ll wait for the Call to Post.
